Torres memulai karirnya bersama Atlético Madrid. Bersama Atlético Madrid, Torres bermain sejak tim junior. Dia memulai debut profesionalnya pada 27 Mei 2001 dan mencetak gol pertamanya seminggu kemudian. Pada musim 2003-2004 Torres mencetak 21 gol setelah sebelumnya dianggap sebagai Vicente Calderon muda pada usia 19 tahun. Selama 12 tahun kariernya bersama Atlético, Torres telah mengkoleksi 75 gol dalam 174 penampilan di La Liga. Namun sebelumnya, Torres sempat bermain selama dua musim di Segunda División, bermain sebanyak 40 pertandingan dan torehan 7 gol. Kemudian dia bergabung dengan Liverpool pada Juli 2007 dalam usia 23 tahun, dengan nilai transfer diperkirakan sekitar £20 juta yang memecahkan rekor nilai transfer Liverpool. Torres mencatat sejarah di musim pertamanya bersama Liverpool dengan menjadi pemain pertama yang mencetak lebih dari 20 gol dalam pertandingan liga dalam satu musim sejak Robbie Fowler pada musim 1996-1997.

Dia juga bermain dalam Spanyol dan membuat debutnya bersama tim senior saat pertandingan melawan Portugal pada September 2003. Tujuh bulan kemudian dia mencetak gol pertamanya ke gawang Italia. Torres telah bermain bersama tim nasional Spanyol dalam 3 turnamen besar; Euro 2004, Piala Dunia 2006 dan Euro 2008. Torres gagal mencetak gol untuk tim Spanyol dala Euro 2004, namun dia berhasil mencetak 3 gol dalam Piala Dunia 2006. Torres mencetak satu-satunya gol kemenangan Spanyol dalam partai final Euro 2008 melawan Jerman dengan skor akhir 0-1.
